Floor Printer Prep and Design Tips

Clean and protect painted areas

1. Choose a suitable location for your parking space painting.

Artists create parking space designs on large, visible surfaces, often using a floor printer for efficient and precise results. A flat surface without many obstructions is the easiest to work with. The amount of space required depends on the size of the design you plan to create, and you should ensure you can access all areas of the surface, including higher sections if needed.

Dedicated painters do almost any surface job. Some painters prefer metal corrugations, bricks or even ceilings. A bumpy surface can give your parking space a unique texture.

If you don’t own wall space, remember to get permission. If you own your own home, you are free to use your own home, but ask before you paint someone else’s property or public space.

2. If you can’t reach the entire wall, use scaffolding or ladders.

For most parking space painting projects, you need some kind of push to get to the top. Use a small ladder to get where you can’t. If you need to go higher, put up scaffolding or rent an aerial lift. Many people rent scaffolding, which allows you to paint high places safely. If your paint surface is low enough, you don’t need scaffolding. Stand and draw.

3. Wash the walls with soap and water to remove impurities.

Before you start, inspect the walls for damage, hard-to-wash stains, and other issues that need to be addressed. Any debris on the wall will show up in your work. Mix about 3 tablespoons (44 ml) of alkaline liquid laundry detergent or dishwashing liquid into a bucket of water and scrub the walls with a rag. Let the wall dry before you start wall printing.

4. Repair and prepare the floor surface

After cleaning the floor, check for cracks, holes, or uneven areas. Use filler or putty to smooth out imperfections and create a flat surface. A smooth wall will ensure better print quality and sharper details.

If the wall is too rough or porous, consider applying a primer or a base coating. This helps improve ink adhesion and makes the final image more vibrant and durable.

5. Apply a base coat if necessary

For darker or highly textured walls, applying a white or light-colored base coat is highly recommended. This creates a neutral background that enhances color accuracy and brightness during wall printing.

Allow the base coat to dry completely before proceeding. Skipping this step may result in dull or inconsistent colors in the final print.

6. Set up your floor printer properly

Before printing, position the floor printer on a stable and level surface. Make sure the machine is aligned correctly with the wall to avoid distortion or misalignment in the image.

Check that all components are functioning properly, including the print head, ink system, and sensors. Run a quick test print if needed to ensure everything is working smoothly.

7. Upload and adjust your design

Import your design into the control software. Adjust the size, position, and alignment according to your floor dimensions.

Take time to preview the design carefully. Make sure the proportions are correct and that the placement matches your intended layout.

8. Start the floor printing process

Once everything is ready, begin printing. The floor printer will move automatically while applying ink layer by layer onto the surface.

Avoid touching or disturbing the machine during operation. Monitor the process to ensure consistent quality and correct any issues if needed.

9. Let the print cure and dry

After printing is complete, allow the image to fully cure. If UV ink is used, curing happens quickly, but it’s still best to avoid contact for a short period.

For added durability, especially on floors or high-traffic areas, consider applying a protective coating such as varnish or epoxy.

10. Maintain and protect the finished work

To keep the printed surface in good condition, avoid harsh cleaning chemicals and excessive abrasion. Use gentle cleaning methods when needed.

Regular maintenance will help preserve the color, clarity, and lifespan of your wall or floor print.
